
Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), established in 1962 in Ludhiana, Punjab, is a premier institution dedicated to agricultural research, education, and extension services. Modeled after the Land Grant System of the USA, PAU has played a pivotal role in transforming India's agricultural landscape, notably pioneering the Green Revolution in the 1960s. The university comprises six constituent colleges: College of Agriculture, College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, College of Home Science, College of Basic Sciences & Humanities, College of Horticulture and Forestry, and PAU-College of Agriculture Ballowal Saunkhri. PAU's mission focuses on achieving excellence in teaching, research, and extension by providing quality education, conducting basic and applied research to develop cost-effective agricultural technologies, and acting as a catalyst for the growth of agro-based industries in Punjab. The university has been instrumental in developing over 809 crop varieties and hybrids, with 173 released at the national level. Notably, it produced the world's first hybrid grain pearl millet and India's first Bt cotton variety, PAU Bt 1. In recognition of its outstanding achievements, PAU was declared the Best Agricultural University in India in 1995 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
